It was on the steps of the Union Buildings that President Mandela addressed the nation at his inauguration. Pretoria and the North includes the Union Buildings, the State Theatre, Melrose House, Lesedi Cultural Village, the Pretoria Zoo, the Tswaing meteorite crater, the African window museum and Church square. Pretoria is a quiet and beautiful garden city, shady jacaranda trees line its historic streets, creating a veritable carpet of purple blossoms in spring.

The large, granite edifice of the Vootrekker Monument, which commemorates the trials and tribulations of the Great Trek, incorporates a museum and its 260 steps lead up to the dome, where splendid views of the surroundings can be enjoyed.

Not far is an old mining town, Cullinan, developed around the Cullinan Diamond Mine which has produced the famous Cullinan Diamond, the world's largest at 3,106 carats and the Greater Star of Africa at 530 carats. Pretoria has more than 100 parks, bird sanctuaries and nature reserves in its vicinity. The Pretoria National Zoological Gardens is one of the top 10 zoos in the world where over 140 mammals and 320 bird species live together, with an aquarium and reptile house.
