General Safety |
| As with all popular holiday destinations around the world it is
necessary to be cautious. Enquire at Tourist Information Office if you are
unsure as to the safety of an area you plan to visit. Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying cash, expensive jewellery, cameras and other valuables. It is not advisable to carry large sums of money. Avoid dark, unlit or isolated places. Night-club district Hillbrow, and the Central Business District (Johannesburg City in particular), as well as Townships, are best visited with a local guide. It is preferable to carry certified copies of your passport and travel documents rather than the original documents. Carry a route map or street plan at all times, or hire a local tourist guide. In the event that you are accosted, do not offer resistance. In the event of an emergency requiring the police, ambulance services or rescue services, call South Africa's National 10111 or 10177 Tourist's enjoyment and well being are the utmost importance to the tourism industry. |

| In the street :
Avoid ostentatious display of expensive jewellery, cameras and other valuables. Don't carry large sums of money around. Plan your route beforehand. It is better to explore in groups and to stick to well lit, busy streets. Steer clear of dark, isolated areas. A policeman or traffic officer will be glad to direct you if you get lost. If you want to call a taxi, your hotel, credible restaurants, the closest tourism information office can recommend a reliable service. Ensure that you travel with taxi's that are registered only, (they will have radio communication, a meter and will display the name of the company they work for). In the car : If you require assistance, seek help at police stations, service stations or other Public Authorities. Plan the route to your destination before commencing your journey. Keep your car doors locked at all times and wind the windows up. Lock valuable items in the boot (trunk). At night, park in well-lit areas. Never pick up strangers. Townships and Informal Settlements : Many townships in Gauteng lack adequate street signs and are easy to get lost in. It is not advisable to explore township heritage sites without a local guide. This will ensure that your visit to any township is safe and problem free. In addition, by patronising a local guide from the township you are assured of contributing to revenue generation where it is most needed. Informal Settlement areas should, under no circumstances be visited without a registered guide! At the hotel : Do not leave your luggage unattended. Store valuables in the hotel's safe deposit box. Keep your room locked, whether you're in it or not. If someone knocks, check who it is before opening the door. Hand the keys in at the desk whenever you leave the hotel. |
